Here are some steps that you can implement today to improve your indoor air quality.

  • Change the air filters on your furnace regularly with the highest quality and highest MER rating possible. This should be completed at least every 3 months with high quality filters or monthly with standard filters. This is the #1 way to improve your indoor air quality.
  • Have your air duct cleaned and make sure they are all sealed properly. This will also help make your air handling system much more efficient.
  • Vacuum your house often using a vacuum cleaner that has a high quality HEPA air filter system. The rule of thumb for frequency of vacuuming your home is: Vacuum at least once per week for each person the lives in the home. This means if (4) persons or animals live in the home, then it should be vacuumed at least (4) times per week. If you keep it vacuumed then the indoor air quality entering the air handler will be cleaner resulting in less dust particles being spread throughout your home.
  • Do not smoke in your home. As obvious as this may sound many people do not realize how smoke pollutes the air in your home by working its ways into every nook and cranny of everything in your home. If you must smoke, step outside.
  • If you have pets that are kept indoors, make sure to regularly brush their fur coats with a undercoat removing style brush. This will help remove any loose pet dander.
  • Make sure to clean the filters on any exhaust ventilation fans in the kitchen and bathrooms.
  • Keep the humidifier adjusted properly according to the outside temperature. Too much moisture and you will increase the chance of mold growth. Homes should be in the range of 30% to 40% humidity.

By using these steps to improve indoor air quality your family will thank you for making it easier to breath clean air.
