Decorating your home can be very exciting. Our homes are a place to express ourselves and create a space that reflects our true selves.

Fashion is often associated with clothing, but home fashion is also a huge and budding industry. Interior designers and decorators are always looking for the latest trends and with the rise in popularity of cable channels like HGTV it is easier than ever for consumers to keep up with the biggest trends in home décor. Unfortunately, many do it yourself decorators choose a trendy item because it is the latest thing and not because they actually like it. This can lead quickly to decorator regret.

No need to worry though, here are a few of the latest decorating trends you might want to avoid.

#1

Ironic and eclectic decorating styles have really started to gain popularity over the last few years. Celebrities who have let cameras into their homes to photograph their uniquely decorated pads have been the birth place of many trends but perhaps the most sought after is the taxidermy and antler trend. Whether they are real antlers and mounted animal heads from a hunting trip or one of the fabricated paper-mache dear heads you can find at any number of hipster home décor stores, this trend is one to forgo during your next room makeover.

#2

If you are decorating your home to sell, you may still want to give this next trend a try, but if you are creating a space to live in, the minimalist hotel look is a little cold and impersonal. This trend took hold when a number of home stores began offering hotel linen collections but quickly spiraled out of control. There are many ways to give a room a luxurious feeling without sacrificing personality. If you want to keep a room feeling clean and elegant avoid making bad trend decorating choices by introducing a unique piece of artwork or other personal touch.

There was a time when color was feared by homeowners and white was the wall color of choice. When most homes had white walls, daring home owners broke out of the box by adding an accent wall to help give a home a pop of color and liven up the space. Unfortunately, this decorating practice has become routine and no longer creates the same intrigue it used to. Now the accent wall is dull and expected. The passing of this trend does not mean you have to go back to boring white walls, bold color choices are now widely accepted and can give your home a more custom feel. If you are choosing a bold color for your walls, make sure you take into account the color of other rooms that are visible from your newly decorated space. Keeping all of the walls that are visible from your space the same color or at least complimentary colors will help add flow to your space that an accent wall never could.

If one of these decorating trends is truly you, there is nothing wrong with going with your instincts, but just be cautious when incorporating them, and be sure you are doing it because you love it, not because some magazine or TV show said it would be a good idea.

  1. Before you do anything to change your home decor – whether it’s just one room or the entire house, ask yourself (and others in your family, if it’s a group decision), what do you want to accomplish. Is it just to get a fresh look with a new color on the walls, or is it to really throw out the old and start all over again? If it’s a new wall color you’re considering, make sure the paint you purchase will compliment your existing furnishings. Don’t rush out to your nearest home supply store and purchase a can of paint because it’s on sale or your think the color will do. Get several paint swatches and bring them home..;’-
