Years ago when home entertainment first hit mainstream, you had to deal with lots of wires and cords. Even the remote controls of old had to be tethered to a cord.

Sure, you could flip the channels from your couch; as long as your cord reached that far. Now it’s common to see a wireless remote control in every home. What’s not as common is to see a complete wireless home theater system in every home. But times are changing and wireless home theater systems are cheaper than they’ve ever been. If you’re thinking about getting a wireless system you should know that there are both pros and cons. The pros may be obvious: no cords to trip over and the freedom to put the components pretty much everywhere. The cons may not be so obvious and one of the big ones is that they can be interfered with quite easily. We’ll examine both and then you should decide if a wireless home theater system is for you.

Pros

The pros of a wireless home theater system are easy. First of all, there are no cords to trip over. You could have the best home theater system money can buy but you’ll soon get discouraged by it if you’re constantly tripping over wires. Not only do you have wires going to all the components but you also have cords galore reaching out to the wall sockets so you can get power to them. These cords can easily become jumbled up and getting them straightened again is no small task. With a wireless home theater system, you don’t have to worry about unsightly and dangerous cords. The components are all cordless, which makes placing them easier too. And that’s another pro about wireless systems. You’re not limited to certain areas as far as placement goes. You used to have to place the components only in places that were next to an electrical outlet. No longer. Now you can have them anywhere in your home.

Cons

The cons of wireless home theater systems may not be apparent until you get home and set it up. It’s not common but your wireless system has the potential to be interfered with by wireless remotes outside of your home. For example, if your neighbor also has a wireless home entertainment system, it could interfere with your system. Another con is that a wireless system typically uses infrared to send signals to other components. The signal could become obstructed by other objects or by the component not facing the component sending the signals. These cons aren’t typical and some people never experience them at all but the potential is always there.

By looking at this study, it becomes apparent that the pros overwhelm the cons. And the cons that are listed don’t even happen to everyone. So it would appear that getting a wireless home theater system is a good investment. Still, you should do more research to determine if a wireless system is for you as they are more expensive than systems with wires and you wouldn’t want to spend all that money without knowing what you’re getting first.
