House cleaning & organizing-information guruCleaning leather furniture is easier then you think

The furniture in the house and how maintain it and keep it clean is a question that bothers every housewife. Usually the trouble comes from the fact that the sofa is not something that you can put outside with the laundry to dry and not to use for couple of days. That is why its cleaning has to be quick and efficient at the same time. The suggestions also do not have to include making the sofa too wet and it is good for the detergent to be without washing or at least to be evaporating.

When you have furnished your house with sofas and coaches that are made from leather it will be a little easier for you to wash them, because leather is smooth and do not soaks with water. It also can be dried immediately with cotton cloth.

Still there are some tips and advises that will help you reach better results with the leather cleaning. It is good to know exactly what type of leather is your furniture made of. In some cases it is all made of real leather, at some it is mixed – for example the face is real leather and the back is artificial – and still there are sofas that are made of very good looking artificial leather. These three cases have to make you very careful, because the different materials are responding differently at every type of detergents. If you are not able to find this information on a tag attached to the furniture it is good to contact the company which has sold you the sofas.

However in most of the cases the leather is covered with special protective layer, which will prevent the material from harms, but still do not relay too much on this fact. Extra precautions are always a good idea.

Be sure you have the following items before you proceed to any cleaning: a vacuum cleaner, distilled water, bucket, mild soap (facial or body) like Neutrogena and Dove for example (they are some of the mildest on the market), several soft and dry rugs and leather protector, which can be usually found in any carpet store.

Switch on the vacuum cleaner and clean all parts of the sofa from dust and any small and big particles. Use the brush attachment because the other attachments can scratch the surface of the leather and you do not want this to happen. Use less power on the sucking of the vacuum cleaner because otherwise it can leave marks on the sofa.

After you are done with the vacuum cleaner mix the distilled water you have prepared with few drops of the mild soap. Before the essential cleaning, test the mixture on small surface of the sofa. If this goes ok clean the whole leather surface with it. Use the rags for this step, as you dip them in the soap and distilled water. Do not wet the whole furniture at one time. Work in small sections. After you have used the soapy rug, use another one only wet with the distilled water. With this done you will remove any soap residues which will leave white marks on the leather.

Next, you have to dry the sofa from the water. Otherwise the water will leave very ugly marks on the leather and you have to start the cleaning all over again.

For the next stage of the cleaning you will need another rug. That is why you have to prepare at least ten of them, so you will do everything right. This one will be for some kind of “polishing”. This is the moment when you will use the leather protector liquid. Apply it according to the manufacturer instructions and after that you can consider the job done.
