Bringing the Bling to the Master Bedroom

Finally redecorating our tired master bedroom

It is time to move on to our next Corliss Home Improvement project. It is time to continue on our Master bedroom. Last week we posted about ourCloset Switch-A-Roe”; click on the link to read article and see the pictures. Now we will be starting on the main area of the room. First we want to give you the, “STORY”, about the room and what we want to do to change it.

Our Story

We have a standard 1950’s style Bungalow and the upstairs, our master bedroom, is really just a finished attic space. As you can see in picture #1; the side walls are only 5 ft tall and then slop up to the ceiling. This bedroom is the only space in the home that is finished in drywall; rest is finished in plaster, so we know that this room was completed sometime in the early 1970’s. As you can see in the pictures below the only space for the bed in this room is in front on the window. This does not work well and it gets really cold in the winter.

As you can see in picture #2 & picture #3; the owner whom finished the space installed 4 homemade build-in dressers in the short side walls. Although at the time this probably worked well for the family situation it does not work for us.  Also the build in dressers do not function very well any more. We have already rebuilt all of the drawers and installed better glides for the drawers that did not work well for the 2 dressers that are side by side in picture #2. We come to the conclusion that we wanted to remove the 2 build in dressers on the 1 long wall, picture #3, and reposition the bed in the middle of this space. This would provide use with a nice finished space where we can later build and install a fabric headboard.

When we moved in almost 2 years ago, Michele really wanted to use yellow tone paint on the walls. The brown wall from picture #1 was all ready painted this accent color so we came up with a yellow tone that was rich in color and accented with the brown wall well.

Our Plan

Our plans are to repaint the current brown wall the same yellow color as rest of the other walls and after removing the dressers from the 5 ft tall wall, picture #2,  we will faux paint the wall in a multitude of corresponding colors to create a new accent wall for the bed to sit in front of. We will feature this faux painting project in a future article.

After we remove the dressers, fix the wall up, and faux paint the wall we will also be repainting the handrails, picture #4, and painting the attic access door to match the wall color. Lastly, we will build a fabric headboard to mount behind the bed. We will make this a simple cream base color to add simple elegance. A pair of new glass side table lamps and some new artwork and we will be set. That is until we come up with the money to replace the flooring in the future.
