What to do if you happen to spill paint on your carpet

Even when being as careful as possible, accidents do happen. Luckily, there are ways to clean pigment out of the carpet, so your rug is not entirely ruined.

If you accidentally spill paint on the rug, the first step you need to take is to figure out what kind of paint you are using. There are water based paints and oil based paints that are available on the market to redecorate your walls with. There are different methods to remove the paint from your carpet depending on which type of product you are using.

Water Based Paint

If you do happen to spill water based product on the carpet, there is a relatively straightforward technique you can use to clean the stain. Be sure to act immediately because you don’t want to give the paint any time to dry and set on the carpet. Use a tool to scrape as much of the spill from the carpet as possible, being careful not to spread the color into a larger stain. Use a damp sponge to remove any excess pigment that hasn’t been cleaned up by the scraper tool. Put a clean, dry spotter cloth over the area to soak up the rest of the paint stain. Once the stain is totally removed, rinse the carpet with warm water. Allow the area to dry thoroughly.

Oil Based Paint

If the paint that you spill on the carpet happens to be oil based, then you have to use a process that is a bit different from cleaning water based product. It is a bit more difficult to remove an oil based spill from the carpet, but it can still be done. First, read the paint container to see if there are any recommendations for which type of paint thinner would work best for that specific type of color. If there aren’t any recommendations, then use turpentine, as this works well for removing oil based paints. Apply the turpentine to the area and soak it up with a clean, dry spotter cloth. Once the stain is removed, rinse the area with warm water, and allow it to dry.
